Nut up? Did this woman just infer I have no balls? I didn’t make my first million in eighteen months without balls. I’m a risk-taker. It’s what I do. I’m driven to succeed. She’s seen as much. “I don’t know what I’d do with myself if I didn’t go into the office every day. Mason, he’s got babies, so I understand it. But Alexsandra is six. She’s in school full-time now. That’s nine hours of the day she’s gone, including her commute. Hours I can be in the office.” I start to pace. It helps me think and avoid eye contact. “Haven’t you realized by now that working is all I’m good at? Well, working and fucking, but that’s work, too, in a way.” I look at Simon, who has just leaned himself against the counter. “You going to help here?”

He points at himself. “Oh, not one iota. This is your part of the relationship. I’m just here for the snuggles.”

“Fucking is work? Really? Get over yourself. That’s a fun way to make you feel better. Is that what your problem is right now? You need to come to get your head on straight? Alexsandra wants you around! Not part-time, all the time. Here’s the difference between us. I’m not afraid to admit when I’m scared. Where you, my dear James, can’t admit it. Life, as you know it, has to change in some major ways. You need to decide how you are going to make it happen and then handle it. I can’t do it for you,” Ariella spouts, then starts moving about the kitchen like nothing is wrong.

“I’m not scared. At least not in the way you seem to think. I have ideas, I have solutions, but they are all distant future scenarios.” I look at her as she ignores me. “Will you stop that!” I shout. “I’m trying to have a conversation with you.”

“I’m trying to get stuff put away before the rats get into it or at least try.”

“I'll do it.” Simon steps toward her and then, as she looks at him, seems to reconsider. Hands in the air, he exits stage right.

She’s making me furious. “God damn it. They are named Gremlin and Harry, and they are currently in bed with Alexsandra. So, stop what you’re doing and fucking talk to me.”

Ariella stops and glares at me before setting a pan down rather forcefully. "Don't you dare raise your voice at me!" She pokes me in the chest. "You don't get to get mad at me because what I said was true."

I snatch her wrist in my hand. “Don’t you poke me. Now, I love you, and I love my kid. I’m just more comfortable when I’m working. Don’t you understand? Everything I’ve ever gotten in this world, I had to work for. Including you. So, to think that something like a real-life is going to be handed to me has all my sirens going off.
